I was playing this little riff on the guitar one day and I thought to myself that it sounded like a train. Then I thought, "Gosh, I love songs about trains. Wonder if I could write one?" So I sat there and tried it. I put places in it that I'd like to see if I was traveling on an old steam-engine train. I imagined myself on that train, sweating and loving the wind on my face and the ground moving under me. Watching the fields and trees go by.
Once I drove from Birmingham to Mobile all on back roads. I had no idea there were so many train tracks around! The image of that day stuck with me-the cool air blowing in my open car windows (it was Spring), the smell of the air changing as the sun went down. Funny what you miss when you travel on the interstate. Sometimes it's just as important for a song to feel good as it is for it to sound good, and that's what I was going for here-the feel of the song.
