My grandmother's family (on my father's side) immigrated to Chicago from Lithuania when my grandmother was an infant. Then when she was still a child they moved to Baldwin County, Alabama to farm on Single-Tax Colony land.
The story the song tells is not completely true, as I do not know all the facts. I remember seeing a picture of my Uncle Ed-it was an old sepia tone picture of him as a young man in the fields. His shirt was off and he was very tan and very buff from all the plowing in the hot Alabama summer sun. I must have been really young when I first saw that picture; because I got the idea that the image was colored by Alabama red clay and not by the developing solution of the photographer. Although most of the land was sold years ago, there are maps in the Baldwin County Courthouse that still have the family name on the entire portion.
