I just wanted to write an old-timey gospel sounding song with easy chords. I was going for simple, child-like honesty because kids speak the plain beautiful truth. This is funny: I have a friend with a nine-year-old daughter and another friend with a three-year-old daughter. Both have told me stories about this song being the one on the CD that their daughters sing along to. In the grocery store or the backseat of the car or the bathtub! Wherever...
We had a great time recording this one. Lots of laughs. I wanted a chorus of voices in the background so I made Robbi, David, Luke and Rick each record a backing vocal at different times when they were in the studio. For some reason it was not working! I don't know why it was, but for some reason it sounded SO bad. Daniel and I sat at the soundboard listening to each attempt and we just laughed and laughed. It was really hard to put a straight face back on when each singer emerged from the vocal room, but then when they heard the playback they all laughed too. I guess we were just not experienced enough to know how to set up and record a chorus? Finally everybody gathered around the mic together and we turned it down low in the mix so at least the idea would be there.
